With upwards of half the world’s population living in cities and that percentage expected to increase over the next decade, it’s imperative that public leaders deal with rapid urban growth by leveraging smart city technologies.
Deployments of smart street lighting, traffic monitoring systems, automatic gunshot detection and other smart city technologies are increasing, but applying sensors or deploying an app isn’t enough when they are siloed initiatives. It’s critical to take a more holistic approach by facilitating the sharing of data and information across disparate organisations and enabling true citywide collaboration. This is the only way to fulfill the promise of a smart city. But unfortunately, hurdles remain in connecting these technological advances across public and private organisations.
