GNSS Positioning for Safety Critical Applications

In the last decade, we have seen a rapid growth in the adoption rate of high-accuracy GNSS positioning across multiple industries. This growth has increased in the last five years, with many industries adopting Precise Point Positioning (PPP) correction services for high accuracy. This week at HxGN LIVE, we will show Leica Smartlink, which bridges RTK outages for centimetre positioning using PPP corrections from geostationary satellites powered by Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division.

It is interesting to mention the offshore industry, which has the oldest tradition of using PPP for high-accuracy positioning in a safety-critical environment. Offshore rigs and vessels have to be positioned with high accuracy (<10 cm) using dynamic positioning systems. An error or failure in the position can have disastrous consequences and lead to potential damage to the environment — and even loss of human life. GNSS positioning system providers in the offshore industries like Veripos (part of Hexagon) are required to maintain a very high level of integrity and reliability.

During the coming years, we will see a huge growth in the demand for high-accuracy GNSS positioning in combination with PPP corrections in other new safety-critical applications, such as driverless and fully autonomous vehicles. In these new applications, it will not be enough to provide an accurate position; it will also become critically important to guarantee that the position is reliable and trustworthy. Millions of people will use driverless or autonomous cars in the future, and these vehicles and their occupants will rely on GNSS positioning systems more than ever.

Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division, through NovAtel® and Veripos, has more than 20 years of experience with safety-critical GNSS systems and PPP correction services for the aviation and offshore industries. Functionally safe hardware and firmware combined with multi-redundant correction delivery, network control center and stations are key elements to provide an accurate, but also safe, GNSS positioning.

By leveraging its extensive experience in providing the safest and most reliable positioning for safety- critical applications, Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division will become a key player in our daily lives in the near future– now that’s shaping smart change.
