In honor of Mr. Wright’s 153rd birthday, we celebrate his legacy through an immersive tour brought to life by 3D image scanning technology.
There have been few architects who have been more influential to design than Frank Lloyd Wright. His ability to bring unique and functional structures to life has captured the imagination of art and architectural enthusiasts for decades.
In partnership with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and Matterport, Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, was able to capture the magnificence of Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and studio, with the world’s smallest and lightest 3D scanning camera, the Leica BLK360. The digital reality captured in the video above has provided a new and innovative way to view this unique property online from the comfort of your home. In addition, the BLK360 point cloud has provided a complete, dimensionally accurate, digital reproduction of the famed Wright site and its structures, which the Foundation can leverage for continued preservation efforts.
“The best way to understand Frank Lloyd Wright’s work is to experience it in person; to feel the cooling breeze in the breezeway, to sit in the Garden Room at Taliesin West, to see how the massive views of the desert landscape help you feel connected with nature,” said Jeff Goodman, Vice President of Communication & Partnerships at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. “Unfortunately, we know that not everyone will have that opportunity, so to have these sites scanned and accessible to the public is the next best thing. Then, we hope people will start planning to visit in person to get the full experience of one of the great architectural works in the world!”
